Hindu Iconography



Adoption of several iconic symbols in Hinduism has shaped Hindu Iconography. For instsance, the Swastika gives a connotation of general auspiciousness and a Tilak is worn as a sign of spiritual devotion. So, if you come across a person who has decorated his forehead with a fresh Tilak you will immediately make an inference that he is religious and has just done his morning spiritual rituals and prayers. Such strong is the role played by Semiotics and Iconography in the Hindu Religion.

Each Hindu deity can be associated with some form of distinct Iconography that may mostly be unique to the deity or the region they are worshipped in.
