“Iconography” comes from the Greek word “Ikon”. Indian Iconography can be studied as a branch of art history, it may also mean depicting a subject based on the content of the image. Iconography is mentioned in numerous ancient texts which can be categorized according to the region they belong to, mainly Northern Texts and Southern Texts.
